Wedding Gown Workout

Want to show off your very best in your wedding gown? A simple fitness program can help you slim and tone your body!

Want to show off your very best in your wedding gown? A simple fitness program can help you slim and tone your body! And since exercising at home can be a great way to relax and unwind, "it can also help you better handle the stress involved with all the wedding planning, as well as improve your energy levels," promises Robyn M. Stuhr, Executive Vice President of American Council on Exercise (ACE). Moreover, exercise will make you look fabulous in your bridal dress!

However, certain styles of gowns are designed to really display specific body parts. A strapless dress, for example, will accent your shoulders and upper back. And there's no need to worry if you have a little extra jiggle in the areas that your dress tends to showcase. Some targeted exercises can help ensure that your body looks breathtaking when you're walking down the aisle!

These exercises don't require much room, so you can complete these workouts in even a small apartment. And they're great for your budget, too, since the only equipment you need is some dumbbells or resistance bands. (For complete descriptions and photos of the exercises, visit the ACE website: http://www.acefitness.org/getfit/)

So what style of dress do you plan to wear?

Spaghetti straps: Slender arms will help you look elegant in a dress with spaghetti straps. To make your arms look sleek, "good old bicep curls will do the trick," says Stuhr. Do 3 sets of 10-12 curls for each arm. You may also want to consider doing 3 sets of tricep kickbacks for extra toning.

Strapless: A strapless gown is designed to showcase shapely shoulders and a toned upper back. Try bending over and completing rows with your dumbbells to shape your back. For your shoulders, use light weights to do 2 sets of 8-10 side and front raises.

V-neck: If your dress emphasizes your cleavage, you'll probably want to give your chest a boost. A few sets of 10-20 basic push-ups are a great way to strengthen chest muscles and lift your breasts. If a standard push-up is too difficult, Stuhr suggests doing them off the edge of your kitchen counter.

Short: Not every bride chooses a traditional long dress. Some opt for a shorter version that hits at the calves or knees. In that case, your legs may be the center of attention! They'll look nicely toned if you do 3 sets of 10-20 squats and toe raises before your big day.

Mermaid/Sheath: Brides who are proud of their booty may choose a mermaid or sheath style gown, since many of them skim the derriere. To boost and tighten your rear view, try a few sets of 10 backward lunges and 10 squats.

No matter which type of dress you choose, you may want to consider combining all these exercises into one pre-wedding workout routine. By the time you walk down the aisle, your entire body will be toned and shapely.

There's an added benefit to all these exercises, too. They not only help you look gorgeous on your bridal gown, they can also be helpful for your life after the wedding! "Weight training will help you to strengthen muscles in specific areas of the body and prepare you for all the fun fitness activities involved in many honeymoons," promises Stuhr. So as you exercise in preparation for the big day, remember that the results can last far into your marriage!
