It Takes Two

Let’s face it. When it comes to weddings, couples are most interested in planning the perfect honeymoon. But what does that mean? Jane wants to sit on a beach where cocktails with mini umbrellas magically appear. Joe thinks bungee jumping by day and gambling by night is the ultimate getaway.
If this sounds like you and your fiancé, relax. There’s no need to call off the wedding. Today, honeymoons run the gamut from the traditional island getaway to an exotic African safari to camping in the Grand Canyon. What makes the trip special is incorporating the interests of both the bride and the groom.

The Common Denominator
For many couples, the goal of a honeymoon is to escape the stress of months of nuptial planning. But relaxation means different things to different people. Ask yourself what you want from your time away. And most important, answer honestly. You may discover that you want to explore the history and culture of Europe while your fiancé is interested in hang-gliding and the buffets. Or maybe you want to spend each day pedaling down bike paths, while he wants to check out deep-sea fishing.
Having varied interests keeps things exciting. Rather than forcing your interests to fit neatly into the itinerary — or worse, ignoring what you really want — recognize the need to compromise. It’s OK to spend time away from each other, even on your honeymoon. But travel experts agree that your destination should be one that entices you both.
Determine how you’d like to fill your time individually and as a couple. Consider location, accommodations, activities and nightlife. Do you see beaches, mountains, canyons or skyscrapers? Are there lots of people, or are you secluded? Are you being pampered at a spa or embracing nature? Are evenings quiet, or are you dancing ’til dawn?

Destination Vacation
Many locations offer a variety of activities. Cruising and all-inclusive island resorts are appealing options for couples that want everything. They’re also very budget-friendly with food, lodging and activities covered in one rate.
Sandal’s Dunn’s River Villagio Golf Resort & Spa in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, for example provides an 18-hole golf course, full-service spa and fun water activities, not to mention two swim-up bars. What can be more relaxing than locking up your wallet upon arrival and doing as much — or as little — as you please?
Couples looking for domestic fun in the sun with a hint of sightseeing have plenty of options. Cape Cod offers romantic waterfront accommodations and enough attractions to satisfy any appetite. Chatham’s Wequassett Resort and Golf Club’s historic architecture sits peacefully on Pleasant Bay. You can relax, partake in leisurely lawn games like croquet or bocce, or tee off on the resort’s scenic links. For a more revved-up experience, rent a boat or kayak, or try your hand at windsurfing. Quick drives to quaint Cape Cod villages and beaches are at the ready, as are ferries to the neighboring islands of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket.
Still others may find that the lure of yesteryear draws them overseas. Ireland is a great choice for couples that may want to explore the culture of their ancestors on one hand and enjoy the charm (read: pubs) of historic cities on the other. For honeymoon luxury, Dromoland Castle in County Clare delivers elegance and history, along with European spa treatments, fishing, boating and even clay pigeon shooting. Just 6 miles from Shannon Airport, Dromoland is near the cities of Limerick and Galway, where modern activities — touring, shopping, pub crawling — await.
Combining individual interests in your honeymoon itinerary makes for an unforgettable journey. Not only will you learn more about each other, but you’ll design a vacation that leaves you both relaxed and revived.
