As we’re gearing up for the presidential election, now is the perfect time to get involved in a women’s political organization. Whether your leanings are left, right, or center, joining an organization will help you connect with like-minded women and help make your voice heard during this crucial election season. And of course, guys are welcome too!
The League of Women voters is a grassroots organization throughout the United States, with 900 state and local leagues. Their mission is to educate the public on various political issues and to encourage active participation in the government. They do not support or oppose candidates, but they do lobby elected officials on issues ranging from health care to homeland security. By joining the League of Women Voters, you can work on their initiatives and receive invites to hear elected officials speak on impending legislation, among other benefits.
If you’re interested in running for office, The White House Project offers seminars and training sessions across the country aimed at equipping women with the skills to run for office. Their goal is to advance women’s leadership in all areas—including, and up to, the U.S. presidency. There is no need to join the organization to attend an event, but you can spread the word about their mission by connecting with them on social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook.
National Federation of Republican Women
The NFRW is one of the largest women’s political organizations in the country. They help to promote the GOP’s principles and works in order to get Republican nominees elected. Plus, they have a mentorship program designed to encourage women within the party to seek public office. The group’s recent initiatives include urging states to pass new laws to protect children from sexual predators. Membership can allow you to network with other Republican women and participate in the campaigns of Republican candidates. You do not need to be a registered Republican to join.
EMILY’s List is dedicated to electing pro-choice Democratic women to office. Through membership fees and donations it recruits and funds female candidates, helps them run effective campaigns, and mobilizes women voters. You can join EMILY’s List by contributing $100 or more to the organization and pledging to contribute $100 to at least two recommended candidates. In return you receive in-depth information on pro-choice Democratic women running for office and invitations to events across the country honoring their candidates and elected officials. You can also join their free online community to receive e-mail updates on candidates and initiatives.
National Council of Negro Women, Inc.
Probably best known for their yearly Black Family Reunion Celebration, the NCNW’s goal is to inform the public and public officials about issues affecting African-American women and their families, and to foster leadership among African-American women. By joining you can network with female leaders in the African-American community and volunteer for their community-based heath, education, and economic empowerment programs.
The Human Rights Campaign is the largest civil rights organization working for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GBLT) equality in the U.S. Their mission is to improve the lives of GLBT Americans by lobbying elected officials, providing education on GBLT topics, and mobilizing grassroots supporters. They welcome volunteers at the local level, as well as financial contributions.
