Run-D.M.C. Makes History For Sneakerheads Everywhere
This Day in Hip Hop History marks a monumental event for sneakerheads everywhere. Before Kanye had his Yeezy's, before Dame Dash acquired Pro Keds and before Master P brought basketball to Converse, there was the sneaker deal to launch all sneaker deals.
Run-D.M.C. earned hip hop's first sneaker endorsement deal back on July 19, 1986 after an epic moment during their show at Madison Square Garden. The group was known for sporting Adidas "Superstars" as their signature footwear, and as the group performed their song "My Adidas", they asked their entire audience to remove their sneakers and hold them up in the air. The group's manager Lyor Cohen had asked one of Adidas' executives, Angelo Anastasio, to come to the concert in hopes that it could be the start of something big. Anastasio was so inspired and impressed by the crowd's enthusiastic response holding up their sneakers, he rewarded the group with a 1-million-dollar endorsement deal. This was entirely unprecedented for musicians - rap artists especially - during this time.
The deal caused "Superstar" sales to skyrocket and earned Run-D.M.C. their own Adidas line and sponsored tours. Since that day, dozens of hip hop artists have gotten their own sneaker deals, but it would not have been possible without Run-D.M.C. They made history at Madison Square Garden back in 1986 and it is a legendary moment that drove a sneaker revolution.
